Okarito offers the photography enthusiast a phenomenal palate to choose from – from landscapes of rainforest and backdrops of the Southern Alps, a wild west coast beach, Okarito river mouth, and of course the array of wading and forest birds. It is telling in that two of the resident population (of only 25 permanent residents) are professional photographers, and both offer local workshops.
Andris Apse, renowned New Zealand landscape photographer holds one annual workshop in May – this 3 day intensive is spent with many hours out on the boat and is for landscape photography. Limited to just 12 participants, this workshop sells out very quickly. You may also be interested in visiting his gallery in Okarito. The gallery will be open by appointment ( Phone or email ) from mid Nov. to early Dec. Then open every day until end of March ( Christmas to New Year closed). After that by appointment again.
Rina Sjardin Thompson has also recently moved to Okarito. Her encouraging and non-judgemental philosophy is becoming as well known as quickly as she is as a photographer in demand — from her “all welcome” workshops that range from “Epic” (including doors off helicopter flights!) to introductory workshops. She is very often on the boat with us, particularly in the mornings and you can see many of her images from Okarito on both our facebook page and her Gallery facebook page. She offers custom shoots for a variety of occasions and travels regularly around the country.
You can register for one of her workshops or create your own personal one on one time with Rina as your tutor for the day or longer. You can see her work in her office on Facebook by following the link below…
