Fascinating Lagoon tour, with an extremely knowledgeable guide. We saw many different birds, including a Heron against a backdrop of snow capped mountains. We even had a coffee and biscuit break. Wonderful experience!
We booked this the night before on the spur of the moment (the joy of the internet). We didn't really know what to expect. We arrived for the 9 am trip to find we were the only customers, so Swade gave us a personal 2-hour excursion. There were loads of birds to see and Swade was an eager guide. We then ventured into the rainforest where we learned more about the conservation efforts and saw wild orchids growing. Swade then said, "it's 10 o'clock, time for tea". He tied up and made us fresh tea and coffee together with homemade cakes in the middle of the rain forest. Truly amazing. We saw more similar birds on the way back. The highlight was watching a heron trying to swallow a flounder. We think the heron won in the end. What a fantastic and impromptu experience. Thanks, Swade and good luck with all your conservation work. Remember to prepare for the sand flies though. We had an awesome experience, the guide was very knowledgeable and it was obvious that he sincerely cared about the lagoon and surrounding area. It rained a bit, but that didn't damper our trip. The cuppa and cookie break was a bonus. The office staff (Paula) was extremely helpful and friendly.
Dear Paula and Swade, We are now back on the other side of the world, and are busily sorting through the photos. As promised, I am sending you the copy of the wood pidgeons up in the tree, plus a couple other photos, that I thought you might like. It was a really lovely afternoon out on the lagoon (13 January), and we want to thank you very much indeed. Your friendly and welcoming service was fantastic and our hopes to see the White Heron were topped with added extra sitings. Thank you! We wish you both a great summer and continued success. Alice and Hans Rummer

What a place to relax!! The beach, the bush, the lagoon, the birds and the Kiwi Cottage! Thank you for the opportunity to share in your piece of paradise.
“We had such a lovely time here in this wonderful, cozy home. It’s the only place we’ve stayed in these last 3 weeks that actually feels like “home”! The fireplace made the night perfect for us. Thank you for such a memorable, delightful time in Okarito!
“It’s the simple things in life that matter most of all”, never a truer word spoken! We have had 3 wonderful days in Okarito and feel very lucky that we, as a family, got to enjoy such a pristine slice of NZ. The cottage was clean and well equipped, fabulous
We had a wonderful morning with Swade, our guide, and boatman for a tour of the lagoon. This is a stunningly beautiful place with heritage protection, and it was great to have such a knowledgeable guide to explain the sustainable management of this area as well as seeing the variety of birds that make their home here. We gained a real insight into the flora and fauna and saw many kotuku, the native white heron, even though it was not the breeding season. We highly recommend this tour, and were shown real West Coast hospitality, by Swede and Paula Sheridan who own and run this company - friendly and helpful!
